Yesterday (16 March 2021) members of the Scottish Parliament voted unanimously for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill to become law. The new Act directly incorporates children’s rights into domestic law. Public authorities will have to comply with the United Nations Convention, just as they must comply with ECHR. The Children’s Commissioner (Bruce Adamson, pictured) will have the power to take legal action in relation to children’s rights. The Act will come into force within 6 months of the Royal Assent.
